An overzealous night queen at the popular Kamba night spot in Blantyre seized a Blackberry Smartphone from a client after he failed to settle a K7, 000 bill he presented him with for sexual services she rendered him.
However, last Friday Blantyre Police locked up the sex worker, identified as Christina Zalowa, 23, and her 36-year-old client Mark Bulugama for the suspected offences of oral sex and prostitution.
Sources privy to the matter told The Weekend Times that on January 30, 2013, Bulugama a Zingwangwa resident sought the services of Christina in his car at the car park at a fee of MK1000.
However, in the process of sexual intercourse, the night queen started raising her charges. By the time he ejaculated, the price had reached a whopping K7, 000.
"But when time came to pay for the service, the man couldn't see his wallet. Then the girl couldn't do otherwise but withhold his expensive Blackberry which he was advised it will be given back after paying the whole amount," said a source close to the sex worker.
But worried about losing the expensive gadget, Bulugama decided to report the incident to Police for assistance. The same night, Police went to Kamba to search for the sex worker who admitted confiscating the Blackberry because her client did not pay for the services she rendered.
The statement Christina recorded at Blantyre Police, whose copy we have in our possession, reads: "I am a mother of two children, prostitute and reside (sic) in Mbayani–Gaisi location. Indeed today's night (sic) I went to Kamba bottle stores to search for money through prostitution. Whilst at there, this gentleman (pointing at Mr. Bulugama) approached me and asked for unprotected normal sex and oral sex in which we agreed at a price of MK7, 000.00 (i.e. MK5, 000, 00 for unprotected (no use of condom) normal sex and MK2, 000.00 for oral sex).
We started with normal sex and end (sic) with oral sex. We did that in his car at the car park but he failed to pay me. I resolved the matter by taking his Blackberry cell phone and I told him that I'll give it back whenever he will find my money. I asked my friends the whereabouts of this man; they told me that it is his habit "amakonda kumanyenga akazi alibe ndalama".
Whilst waiting for him to bring my money, it's when I saw police officers coming with this man. That's all what I can say."
In their mediation the Police suggested that Bulugama should pay Christina for her services as per agreement so that the girl should release the phone. But the man had only K500 on him. The Police resolved the issue by asking Christina to accept the K500 but surrender the Blackberry to them so that Bulugama should redeem it once he paid the balance.
But, in a dramatic twist of events, when the two reported back to Police for Bulugama to settle the balance with prostitute and retrieve his BlackBerry, they were surprised to be arrested for fresh offences. According to the charge sheet, the two were charged with oral sex which, according to Police, is against Malawi unnatural acts, sex against the order of nature and indecent practices laws.
Christina also faces an additional charge for prostitution which is illegal in Malawi.
Blantyre Police spokesperson Lameck Thembachako confirmed the arrest of the two, saying they have since been given bail. He said Bulugama and Christina are expected to appear before court when investigations are over.
"Police is there to protect life and property. In order to protect the lives of those who live a promiscuous life from catching HIV/AIDS, the deadly disease, we were forced to apprehend the two so that those who are left out there should take a lesson," he said.
