Back Weekend Times Headlines Comment Sex workers’ move is commendable

Sex workers’ move is commendable

We advocate for the idea of sex workers  forming an alliance. It is a fact  that sex workers in the country are  abused.

Their job environment has a lot of  hazards ranging from health concerns  to physical safety.

Recently there  have been abounding reports of sex  workers being abused by the Police.

Unfortunately because prostitution is  regarded an illegal business in Malawi,  the rights of sex workers have  suffered neglect and the police take

advantage of this situation to abuse  them.

But sex workers are also human beings  and they are into this business to  earn a living. It is therefore important  that their rights should be respected.

The sex workers are particularly at  great risk because of HIV/Aids which  is mainly contracted through sex.

We hope this alliance will help to  protect the rights of the sex workers from abuse. We hope it will also

help to improve access to information that will protect the sex workers from  avoidable infections.
