Sponsor dumps Salima Town Hammers

The future of the Malawi's Chipiku Lilongwe and District Football League (LDFL) outfit Salima Town Hammers looks bleak following the withdrawal of the sponsorship by a Burundian national.

The side's chairperson Heston Mulli said the sponsor Manuel Mvula informed them that he could no longer continue bankrolling the side due to financial constraints.

He said the development could force the lakeshore district based team to disband if well wishers do not come to their rescue.

"We are not sure if we will participate in this year's season because of the withdrawal of the sponsorship. This is why we would like to take this opportunity to appeal to well wishers to support us," Mulli said.

The team had a fairly wonderful performance last season as it finished on position seven on the log table.

Mulli said the money which they earn from gate collections during home matches was not enough to sustain the club.

"The money which we earn from the gate fee is not enough to sustain the team because we have many players from other districts that require accommodation and food," he said.

However, he said they were keeping their fingers crossed that they would find sponsorship by the beginning of the new season.

The new season, to be sponsored to the tune of K5 million is expected to start towards the end of the month.
