Bernard Harawa : Winger in pain

Bernard_HarawaMidfielder Bernard Harawa's career has trodden on bumpy paths but never, at any point, did he anticipate his football journey maneuvering its way on the rough, potholed and almost impassable road.

Peter Wadabwa: From disgrace to glory

WadabwaStriker Peter Wadabwa, apart from possessing lightning-quick pace and digital dribbling skills, is one of the most disciplined footballers to have donned the Malawi national team jersey.

The player, who plies his trade for South African side Thanda Zulu Royal, doesn't have the temperament of forgotten winger Fischer Kondowe who could storm out of a stadium after being substituted.

Definitely, Wadabwa doesn't match striker Grant Lungu whose excessive beer drinking, as confessed by his uncle Mavuto Lungu, cost him his blossoming career.

Wadabwa started his career while at St Pius Primary School and continued playing at the secondary schools he enrolled in; St Pius, Bethel and Double Vision.

However, it was in 2002 at Lilongwe's Double Vision where he caught the inquisitive eye of top clubs while playing in the Coca-Cola school's tournament.

It was Silver Strikers who roped him. This was surely the start of his journey into the real football world.

"I think I was impressive during the Coca-Cola tournament. However, it was still a surprise to get an offer from a big team like Silver," he says.

After striking the Silver deal, Wadabwa was also drafted in the Under-17 national team. He featured in one game before being promoted into the Under-20 which he captained.

He was a brilliant striker for the young Flames no wonder he attracted the attention of foreign clubs after his debut season in the Super League.

South Africa's Jomo Cosmos was the first to knock on the Silver's door. They signed him.

Wadabwa crossed the boarders in 2004 but things turned out sour as injuries wrecked his progress. He usually found himself on the bench.

Before him, Flames strikers Esau Kanyenda and Russell Mwafulirwa succeeded at this club but Wadabwa, just like Blue Eagles midfielder Peter Mgangira, did not.

He returned home in 2005 after being de-registered from the club's squad during his second season.

"It was the most painful moment in my career. Jomo Cosmos had a lot of foreign players and the introduction of foreign quota meant I could not stand any chance," he says.

"Unending injuries too were a major setback."

The striker returned home and joined Escom United which had embarked on rebuilding exercise which saw Maupo Msowoya, Mapopa Msukwa and other stars joining the electricians.

"I didn't return to Silver because Escom were very ambitious. They also made a fantastic offer. After the South Africa disappointment I needed a conducive environment to resurrect my career and Escom provided one," he says.

Wadabwa was part of the Escom side which won the first Super League title in 2007.

God smiled on Wadabwa again in 2007/2008 season as he underwent successful trials at Thanda Zulu Royal.

He signed a three year contract at a transfer fee of K6 million. Escom are yet to pocket half of that amount.

The forward ace has been instrumental at the National First Division outfit. He scored 10 goals in his first season before hitting nine in his second.

In this current season he has already netted five goals with the second round yet to kick off.

"I am looking forward to scoring more than 10 goals. I am very focused," he says.

His Thanda contract expires in June next year but the striker is optimistic he will secure another contract.

"Thanda want to keep me but there are interests from other Premier Soccer League teams. I will wait and see what happens in the next six months," he explains.

Wadabwa was part of the Malawi national team that qualified for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations after 25 years in the doldrums.

The striker says being at the tournament was his most memorable moment of his career.

"It was a lifetime dream. This achievement will remain in my memory forever," he says.

The striker has scored over 15 goals for the national and coach Kinnah Phiri usually features him as a right winger.

Wadabwa hails from T/A Mchilamwela in Thyolo district. He dreams of playing in Europe.

Flames’ march to CECAFA quarterfinals

FlamestrainingA win and two draws in their first three matches should not be a source of hype but nonetheless, Malawi's national soccer team is hopeful of clinching the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup semifinal slot Monday.

Kinnah Phiri's boys winged into the quarterfinals with five points after labouring to a one-all draw with Ethiopia in their group stages final match on Friday.

Malawi appeared destined for a loss after left back Emmanuel Zoya conceded a penalty in the early minutes which the Ethiopians led from.

However, in the 25th minute substitute Henry 'Magetsi' Kabichi leveled the scoreline with an credibly taken free-kick from outside the 18 yard box.

The Flames, like in their group C matches against Kenya and Sudan, created a lot of meaningful scoring chances which they did not utilise.

The development has triggered fears among soccer fans that if the poor scoring trend continues, the Flames could not go far in the competition.

But speaking in a telephone interview from the tournament's host nation Tanzania, Malawi team manager Stuart Mbolembole was optimistic they could reach the last four.

"Let's not read too much into the results of our past three matches. What is important is that we are in the quarterfinals.

"Our target is to reach the semifinals. From there we will set another target," Mbolembole said.

Meanwhile, Kinnah will be hoping to have a full squad tomorrow as some of his regular stars Zoya and winger John Banda were substituted after sustaining injuries.

Flames opponents in the quarterfinals were not known as we went to press Saturday because other matches were still underway.
