Zomba United plot Civo downfall

Relegated Zomba United have vowed to spring a surprise by beating Civo United and dent the Capital Hill boys' Super League title hopes.

Zomba United face Civo at the Zomba Community ground this afternoon in their final appearance in the elite league. The Southern Region Football League is their next destination.

It is an encounter Civo need to win at all cost to keep pace with leaders Escom United, but Zomba secretary general Wanangwa Jere says the match is more important to them.

"We want to leave the stage with pride and that is the key factor in this game," he said.

Zomba played with their lungs out against Escom United but were unfortunate to suffer a 2-0 loss last Sunday. Jere said they will take that fighting spirit to the encounter against Civo.

"We will give our best shot. It won't be easy but we are optimistic we will win," he said. "The win will be a big consolation to our fans. They have been behind the team even after we were relegated."

Before their match against Tigers Saturday, Civo were trailing Escom with six points.

But the Capital Hill boys have four games in hand while the power men have one before the season ends.

-Meanwhile, Civo coach Alex Masanjala said he has taken the Zomba warning seriously while revealing they will treat the game with caution.

"We are at a point when we cannot underrate any team. Some weeks ago we underrated Embangweni United because they were already relegated but they ended up beating us," he said.

However, Masanjala said they had better chances of winning the title than the other contenders Escom, Blantyre United and Silver Strikers.

"We have more games in hand than any other team. That is our advantage but we should just be focused," he said.

Before playing Red Lions Saturday, Zomba United had 25 points.
