Evirom reach quarterfinals

Southern Region Football League Premier Division leaders Evirom showed their su¬premacy over Simama Mzuzu and Districts Football League side with a 5-3 victory over Mzuzu University(Mzuni) in the Carlsberg Cup national phase second round at BAT Ground Saturday.

Evirom scored early in the first half through enterpris¬ing youthful forward Wongani Zulu.

It was a game of two halves with Evirom taking control of the game in the first half while the students put the hosts under intense pressure in search of an equaliser in the second half.

But Evirom stood firm to deny them the goal until in the 87th minute when a defender handled in the box.

Smith, who was the toast of the day for the students held his nerves to score the equaliser from the penalty spot.

The game was decided by penalty shoot outs after both sides failed to score during open play.

Evirom scored all the five penalty kicks through Dennis Chimale, Harold Zulu, Fred Jossam, Derrick Somanje and Frank Thewele.

Mzuni first penalty kick by Kadawasi was saved by goalkeeper Madalitso Kameza while Junior Mkumbwa, Pear-son Sauzande and Bosha Nk¬homa scored for Mzuni.

Mzuni coach Alex N for Ngwira said the players did not play according to instruction.

"We played more in the air which made it difficult for the strikers to get good balls," Ngwira said.

Evirom sponsor Emmanuel Viola said his charges were de¬termined to go all the way to final.

"We prepared well for the match and this is the reason why we have beaten them," Viola said.

"I am sure we will fight to reach the final of the cup."

Evirom have a chance to reach the semifinals as they will face the winner between Blue Eagles and Super Eagles in the quarterfinals.
