Evangelist Wame,70, still spreading the gospel

ShadreckwameFirebrand preacher Shadreck Wame has been spreading the word of God for 45 years. our correspondent JUSTICE MPONDA recently had a chat with him on his spiritual journey. Excerpts:

Who is Evangelist Shadreck Wame?

Shadreck Jonas Wame, that's my full name. I was born on October 21, 1940. I became a born again Christian on November 28, 1967 at around 6.30 PM. As of today, I have faithfully served God for 45 years.

How was it to be a born again Christian in the CCAP of 1967?

God knew what He was getting me into when He called me in 1964. The road hasn't been rosy yes.

God called me to instill wisdom in the leaders of my church. Leaders, even those outside the church have failed to live with the people because they are lacking wisdom. Leading people has nothing to do with intelligence or knowledge; it calls for wisdom which only God provides.

So I lived in CCAP because I had that task, and I still have that task. It is even troubling me that I am getting old and weaker by each passing day, when I have not fulfilled that task.

Don't you feel you could have been very rich by now, with appetising titles before your name such as Evangelist Dr. Shadreck Wame had you gone the Pentecostal way in 1967?

No. That would have meant misplacing the Gospel, trying to redeem people from the consequences of sin instead of redeeming them from sin itself.

That would have been commercializing miracles, letting people receive their healings, the deaf hearing, lame walking, while I was sure they were destined for destruction. Salvation is the greatest miracle.

Miracles have been commercialised. Is that what I am getting from you?

Boy, healing someone miraculously, for example, is a God given talent which never goes even though one has sinned against God. Most of these preachers you see performing miracles fell out of grace with God long time ago, but they are still performing miracles just to put bread and butter on their table. That is why after performing those miracles, the glory is no longer returning to the creator but to themselves. Read the adverts in the paper, all you see is "come to receive your miracles" not "come to receive Jesus Christ."

The youth you were ministering are conducting themselves in a very Pentecostal way; they are even praying in tongues. Was this what you have been propagating for the past 45 years?

This is less than what some of us have been propagating. I am not even satisfied with their level of faith. They still don't know Jesus Christ. in fact up to date no one in Malawi knows Jesus Christ.

No one in Malawi know Jesus Christ?

I am talking of going beyond knowing Jesus Christ as a son of Joseph and Mary. I am talking of knowing Jesus Christ on a very personal level. Who is He to you, and who are you to Him?

Malawi has become more of a quarrelling nation because people do not know Jesus Christ. There is a lot of bickering within churches because Malawian churches do not know Jesus Christ.

1967 is a very long. Will it be said of you, you fought a good fight and kept the faith, like Apostle Paul of the old?

I am now 70, and I have not even started thinking of slowing down because I am still trying to know Jesus Christ.

You made a name for yourself through recording your sermons in audio tapes, are you still doing that?

I am still doing that, and the booming in technology is really making that simple and fascinating than ever before. I now have 18 albums to my name. I have also transferred all my previous works into CDs.

In the capital, Tripoli, Libyans are putting on a brave face. Giving by trick

“May every one of you, hold the highest currency he has, in his or her hand please,” announces the master of ceremonies in a prayer meeting. Then quickly he says that no one should dare to put it back into his or her pocket since that is the right currency to give. Sadly, everyone goes forward to “give” this highest currency they are holding in their hands. God has already seen it and it would be blasphemy for one to hold another currency in their hand and only to change it when going forward to give.
