Carlsberg national draw Sept 26

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has disclosed that the national draw for the K20 million Carlsberg Cup will be held on September 28.

The association's general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said they were delighted with the progress which all the regions have made in the cup.

"So far so good, the competition has started impressively at regional level," he said. "We hope it will spark additional excitement during the national phase where the Super League teams will be joined by the teams that have qualified from the three regions."

BNC Produsak, Chikhwawa United, Thondwe United and Changalume Barracks qualified for the showdown after winning their qualifying games.

BNC defeated Cobbe Barracks 2-1 at BAT while Chikwawa overcame Evirom 1-0. Changalume booked their place after humbling White Eagles 1-0 at Prison in Zomba.

However, the three clubs that lost Evirom, Cobbe and White Eagles also reached the national finals through boardroom decision after emerging as the best losers during the qualifiers.

In Central Region, Silver Reserve defeated Black Eagles 4-2 on post match penalties to make it to the national phase. The Young Bankers were joined by Blue Eagles Youth and Support Battalion who beat Dowa Medicals 2-0 and Maicc FC 2-1 respectively.

The Fam GS said the draw will also be used to unveil a new calendar of events which Fam was following to complete the season.

"We need all stakeholders to know the direction which we have taken," he said.

Meanwhile, Carlsberg Malawi brands manager for alcoholic drinks Twikale Chirwa said they were impressed with the progress the competition had made.

"We will soon issue our statement regarding the cup before the start of the national phase," he said.

Carlsberg Malawi announced a three-some sponsorship some months ago. The return of the cup also saw Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers earning a one year sponsorship worthy K15 million each.

The brewery is also planning to select one side that will impress the firm by meeting the requirements which they set and some of the crucial indicators are team performance, adhering to discipline and fair play.
