The altercation between President Bingu wa Mutharika and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) that are organizing peaceful demonstrations for August 17, could be handled better. Already, news of the planned demos has created apprehension among peaceloving Malawians and the business community.

Why is it such a big deal to people that once you are married, then they should see your belly protruding (woman); preferably within a few months after you tie the knot, that is according to Malawian culture? If days turn into months and months give in to years, then be sure to be prepared to see people coming to you asking you when it is going to happen! People will begin to assume that one of the two is barren and often the pointing fingers are targeted at the woman.

Inmates, whether young or old and whether on remand or convicted endure the same inhuman conditions in the country’s prisons. These conditions are chiefly characterized by congestion, poor meals, unhygienic conditions and exposure to infection. With a capacity of 6,500 inmates the prisons house 11,500 inmates.
