Silver Strikers coach Hellings Mwakasungula was on Monday night attacked by thugs in Lilongwe's Area 36.
Mwakasungula's neighbour Christopher Lutere confirmed the incident.
He said the bankers' coach was attacked near his house when he was coming from escorting a friend at around 9 pm.
"The thugs attacked him near his house when he had just dropped off from another friend's car. He sustained injuries on his face and in the process he lost a lot of blood," Lutere said.
He said after the incident, he rushed to Area 36 police station where he was given a police report to go to Kamuzu Central Hospital for medical treatment.
Lutere said the coach was admitted at the hospital.
However, Lutere said Mwakasungula was expected to be discharged yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon because his condition had improved.
He said during the attack, he was also robbed of a wallet and two mobile phones but one has since been returned.
"We just realized this morning that the other phone had just been dropped at the house," he said.
Silver's chairperson MacDonald Mafuta-Mwale confirmed the incident in an interview yesterday .
"Yes I received a call informing me about the incident. I am actually travelling to see him at the hospital because I am told he has been badly beaten," he said.
Mwakasungula is one of the Silver's coaches comprising Itai Nundwe, Sibusiso Padambo and Thom Mkorongo and their side is currently leading the Super League table.
