A Malawi bus heading to Lusaka was on Wednesday involved in a fatal accident after colliding with another vehicle in Katete in Zambia.
According to media reports in Zambia, no one died in the bus but some unidentified numbers of passengers in a courier van it clashed with died on the spot near a place called Kafunka.
Press Secretary for Zambian High Commission in Malawi Chansa Kabwela confirmed the accident saying her office had been notified about it but was still waiting for details of the tragedy.
"We have been notified of the accident but we are still waiting for details," she said.
However, at the moment, the BNL Times can confirm that one person who was the driver of the courier died on the spot while some of the passengers in the bus were rushed to the hospital.
Deputy National Police spokesperson Kelvin Maigwa also said he had no details of the accident which happened around 5 am on Wednesday.
A Zambian website, the Watchdog, reported that "the small vehicle has been flattened" but said it was yet known by the time the report was published how many passengers had lost their lives.
The publication quotes one passenger who was in the overturned bus as saying no passenger from the big bus died.
However, the female passenger said she was too traumatised to see the number of casualties in the smaller vehicle.
The bus was coming from Chipata heading for Lusaka when it was involved in the accident.
