Thugs on Wednesday night broke into the office of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director Alexious Nampota but it is yet to be established if any important case files have been stolen or tampered with.

ACB Public Relations Officer Egritta Ndala confirmed that the office which is on the third floor of old National Bank head office building was attacked by some thugs but could not give further details arguing that the matter is with the police.

"I can confirm the incident there was a break in last (Wednesday) night but I cannot speak much because the issue is being investigated by police," Ndala said.

Nampota is at loggerheads with the government after refusing to resign as ACB director.

Blantyre Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Lameck Thembachako said around 9 o'clock at night some guards saw a man breaking into Nampota's office and they immediately called police for assistance.

He said police called Nampota's Secretary to the office and found the man still hiding in the office before arresting him.

"We tried to interrogate him that night but he was not cooperative so we just decided to lock him up until he opens up," Thembachako said.

Thembachako said police are still investigating the matter and hope that the man will open up to disclose his mission at the office.

"We have asked the ACB to do a thorough check to find out if any files, document or anything is missing from the office. As of now we cannot say what is missing at the offices because the suspect has not been cooperative," he said.

The man identified as James Mussa, 24, comes from Salima but lives in Lunzu and is being kept at Blantyre police.
