Ikwanga set for 'Yenda' launch Sat

ONE of the finest local guitarists, Ernest Ikwanga, is set to show Malawi and world that sky is never the limit when it comes to exploiting talent in oneself. He is launching his second solo work Yenda.

"I am looking forward to this special event, I will give my best to my fans and everyone will go home happy! Mafilika, the afro-rock-reggae, will be there.

"There will also be Malingaka, the traditional jazz band, to spice up the launch. What we need is people to come and give us support," Ikwanga said in an interview.

The amazing young artist, who has ever shared the stage with music giants Yewande in the United States and the Beverly Night in the United Kingdom, has unique tunes skilfully intertwined with traditional afro-rhythms in an invitingly amazing fusion with jazz.

Madson Theatre in Lilongwe city thus be an obvious destination for gospel music lovers as Ikwanga l aunche s Yenda on Sa turda y February 2.

"I am looking forward to a great day this day," Ikwanga sums it all up in a few words.

In the new album, Ikwanga fuses traditional Malawian melodies with jazz and some reggae.

Th i s ama z i n g Ma l awi a n guitarist draws inspiration from such music giants as George Benson, Richard Bona and Erik Paliani.

"His recognized talent allows him to perform with internationally renowned artists such as the pop singers Yewande (US) and Beverly Night (UK), the Malawian jazz guitarist Erik Paliani," says Elson Kambalu a member of the committee organising the launch of the new album.

Ikwanga has shared the stage with Masauko Chipembere in the United states of America and has locally performed and recorded wi th the legendary Wambal i Mkandawire on projects such as the album called Liberty.

Er n e s t I kwa n g a h a s a l s o participated in a number of music competitions alongside his afro-rock-reggae band Mafilika.

In 2009, the Music Crossroads Inter-Regional competition jury spotted Ikwanga and had him join the Mundial Festival Tour in the Netherlands. The following year, they won The Fair Play Anti-Corruption international competition and toured in Belgium.

Ikwanga's first solo album is Love Your Neighbor, released in 2008.
